The salt plains crystal dig area is a very unique place. Kind of random that it's in Oklahoma. Everything about the lake area seemed to be well kept. Very enjoyable, I would definitely come back. The only downside is that it's in the middle of nowhere.

My boyfriend and I had the best time digging for crystals with the pupps. We stayed in a cabin just a few minutes north of the salt crystal plain digging area, on the lake. It was a fantastic stay with grilling and fully furnished. Everyone I came in contact with was pleasant and helpful. Wouldn't mind going back. Kind of want one of the awesome patches in the office.

My intent was to capture another session of night photos from one of our mid-western lakes, this time that being the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. This review is similar to the one I left of the lake itself. While I'm not professional by any means I do love to use the clouds, stars and moon to make at least some "interesting" images. I was only able to see a small portion of the refuge due to road and access restrictions but it seems well accessible and protected from careless visitors. (I think that’s why a road was closed that crossed the area to the east.) I encountered some wind so clouds were moving – something to highlight the night sky. I was able to find enough access via a short hike or drive right up to the edge of the eastern side to get a few pictures. I snapped a few pictures from some nearby roads, although it’s not of the refuge itself it still reminds me of the interesting land around it. I’m looking forward to another visit in the “winter” months although I’m not sure of the weather in that part of the country. Does it snow? I’ll just have to find out.

Just a most unusual beautiful place. Unbelievable this is in Oklahoma. You can dig for salt crystals with family and stare at the landscape which is like no other. Be sure to bring a big shovel to get deep faster, smaller spades, and a bucket. Like ever when you get in the sand, you need to bring towels to wipe yourself off and some water to help rinse. There are restrooms, but no where to by a beverage so be sure to being your own.

This is a little known gem of Oklahoma. There are multiple campgrounds and digging for salinite crystals in the dig area is fun for the whole family!
